Richard Snook who is tireless in his support of the Kennet & Avon Canal has been awarded the John Gould Trophy for 2010.

The trophy was donated by British Waterways and has been presented annually by the K&A Canal Partnership since 1997 to a group or individual for "noteworthy actions or deeds for the Kennet & Avon Canal" in memory of the canal's restoration pioneer John Gould.

Richard Snook is boat manager of the trip boat, The Rose of Hungerford, that operates from Hungerford Wharf and he and the crew of the boat have found ever more inventive ways to raise funds that go to help to fund the K&A Canal Trust.

Santa Saga
This year they ran 20 Santa Cruises — and for the past two years among the trips for children they have fitted in two trips for older people on SAGA holidays at a nearby Hotel.

Richard is always available when jobs such as pump outs and emergency repairs need to be done to the 'Rose' — or standing in when a skipper is needed at short notice. And he co-ordinates the work and documentation for the MCA inspections that are essential for the boat to operate.

'Insanitary' Station mission
Richard is also tireless in his campaign to bring about improvements to the canal and boating facilities in the Hungerford areas and in particular to what he always refers to as the Hungerford 'Insanitary' Station.
