BW tug Burland - for sale
K&A work boats in BW sell off

By Bob Naylor

British Waterways is selling off work boats that are no longer needed — among them are three that have given good service on the Kennet & Avon Canal over the years.

The 40 redundant workboats along with surplus boat engines and bank maintenance equipment are to be sold off in an online auction that finishes on 29 September 2010.

Stephen Hames, the BW engineer in charge of the sale said, "We are selling off craft that we no longer need. These old workboats add colour and character to our waterways and we hope to find new owners who will keep them afloat for years to come."

The three boats that are going from the Kennet & Avon Canal are Burland, a 24ft x 6ft 8ins tug, that was used on the River Avon and the canal in the Bath area for many years.  Another tug, Whimbrel, 19ft x 6ft, from the eastern end of the K&A and a 40ft x 13ft 6ins motorised dredger called D16, that last saw service in the Burghfield area.

Bidding begins on 20 September and closes on 29 September 2010.
The lots can be seen at:
